I never really understood the necessity to patch both files. I always used to patch the REL only back in the day. Is there something special that happens?

staticr.rel is for match making
main.dol for info only. MKW-ANA (not sure if the mkw state does it too) is able to show the login region. This helps to kick people with wring distrib early.

@Wiimm If the region is already enabled, do I have to worry about the "Apply a region" page?

Also under "Manage own regions", I do not yet have 817, so that's why I went to the apply page.

Mistake by me. I did it before implemented the current evaluation by system. And then the lookup were wrong.

At this moment I finished the implementation of the new region model and removed to old one. I spent much time in this feature. The last step was the adaption of the new model for MKW region online.

There are only some special cases I haven't implemented, for example moving ownership to other users. But this can be done via direct DB access.

The management and distribution of Custom Track Regions changed in August 2017. Read »Applying regions« for details.

To all region owners

You have to apply your regions at the Wiimmfi portal in 2017 again. Otherwise the regions are returned to the pool of the free regions in the beginning of 2018.

In the last weeks I modified the the region management and added a robot.

The first new thing is the "cancel onwership" checkbox at the region manage page.

If set, the owner has about 60 minutes time to withdraw his decision. After this time, the robot cancels the ownership and disables the region. An unsubscribed region will be disabled for a month and then completely hidden for additional 12 months. After these 13 months, but not earlier than 24 months after last usage, it goes back to the pool of available regions.

4 regions are already canceled. If you don't need your region any longer, please cancel your ownership!

The robot also disables and manages regions following these rules:

Each region, that was never used, becomes candidate for an automatic disabling procedure 12 months after assignment. Each region, that was not used in the last 24 months, becomes candidate too. In both cases, the owner gets a warning message.
31 days after the warning message, the owner loses the control of the region, gets a second message and the region is disabled. From now on the owner has a chance to re-apply the region. 31 days later, the region is hidden from the lists.
12 months after hiding, but not earlier than 24 months after last usage, the region is released and goes back into the pool of available regions.

The first regions were assigned in August 2017. Therefore the first robot activity for these rules is expected in August 2018.

Bug fix for Applying region 20xxx

The were a bug in the workflow if a user applied region 20000 to get the next free region of range 20xxx. I hopefully fixed it.

Please apply region 20000 again!

whats so bad about not using a certain region that the person who owns it

It wastes region space if people reserve regions and then never use them.

And some people reserved regions a year ago, but left the community. So this method is a cleaning process that goes over years.

ok so if i were to register to have my own region and i wanted a specific one but cant because someone else wants it and since there is now a purge going on then I'll be able to get it

There exists a new feature called »Protect private rooms«. If enabled, users of the region will not see users of other regions and vice versa ⇒ the status is shown as »offline«.
This protection works only, if main.dol is patched to the region using the following command line:
wstrt patch --region=123 main.dol
The main goal is to protect private rooms. Additional, it avoids entering regional rooms by friend list.
This protection is available for regions ≥60.
If you change this setting, it becomes valid after the next login. Especially the host of a private room should re-connect after changing the setting.
This feature is in development and in the first testing phase. So the related checkbox is usually disabled and not checked ⇒ you can't use or enable this new feature. If you like to test it, ask me to enable the check box.

You can do that since quite some time. But you also need to patch the StaticR. StaticR needs to be patched for normal online play / online region change. In addition to that (not instead of), the main.dol can be patched, which informs the server about the region you are using. This allows the server to add filtering like the one Wiimm described above. So, patching the main.dol alone will *not* let you play in a custom region.
