Der MPLayer-CE nahm lange Zeit eine Monopolstellung in der Wii-Szene ein. Es gibt zwar noch andere MPlayer-Portierungen wie zB. den MPlayer von Team Twiizer, diese haben jedoch lange Zeit keinen Support mehr bekommen, ebenso die anfangs sehr beliebte GeeXboX-Portierung und so wurde der MPlayer-CE der Standard unter den Multimediaplayern für die Wii. Zumindest bis Anfang 2010, denn im März kündigte Tantric, ein bekannter Homebrew-Developer aus der Wii- und Gamecube-Szene, überraschend WiiMC, einen weiteren Multimediaplayer, welcher auf den MPlayer aufbaut und eine ansehnliche grafische Benutzeroberfläche aufweist. Ca. 1 Jahr wurde an dem Ding gearbeitet, bis eine öffentliche Version released wurde. Die GUI wurde mittels Tantrics eigener Grafikbibliothek libWiiGUI kreiert.
