Was it an hardware problem or a software problem? Because if it was a software problem you could probably patch the server to prevent this kind of thing to happen again.
IMO banning an IP (range) is something extremely rude and pointless while "intelligent" person(s), if we consider the person(s) who has made the server crashed "intelligent" (if it wasn't intentional don't worry about what I just said of course ;vp), could use an IP from another country with a proxy and do it again. In fact, it's the same infernal loop we have for the cheaters.
A temporarily fix is better than nothing, but the circumstances of this issue are strange.
