--mipmap-size num
Define the minimal width and minimal height of a generated mipmap. The default is 16. Tools before v1.49 used 1 as not alterable value. --mm-size is a short cut.

Atlas asked me about the default value of --mipmap-size=16. He found out, that Nintendo used value 8.

Value 16 was a recommendation by Sucht93a. Before the value was 1. He played with it and tested different images. At least he told me, that 1 is definitely too small and 16 a good alternative. With the tests, the option --mipmap-size was born.

Now my question: Should I change the default to 8 or any other value?



While looking at the mipmap options, I found:

--smart
If resizing an image, use the new smart resize function. The new function is much slower (factor 2-4) than the old function, but creates much better resized images. This is only relevant for creating mipmaps with odd width or height.

Has anyone of you tested this option? Can I activate it by default and remove the old algorithm. I think it does not matter, that the new algorithm is slower.

So we should have:

--n-mipmaps=N:
Force number of mipmaps. Ignore options --max-mipmaps and --mipmap-size. Default: deactivated.

--max-mipmaps=N (new option):
Limit the number of mipmaps. Default: 3 or 4

--mipmap-size=SIZE:
Don't create mipmaps smaller than SIZE, Default: 16 or 8

And here are my plans:

--n-mipmaps num
Force the number of mipmaps. Values between 0 and 20 are allowed. Value @OFF@ (default) disables this option. If enabled, options --max-mipmaps and --mipmap-size are ignored. The creation of mipmaps stops if the width or the height of the mipmap becomes 0. --n-mm is a short cut.

--max-mipmaps num
Control the automatic mipmap creation. Values between 0 and 20 are allowed and the default is 4. The mipmap creation for an image stops, if the set number is reached. This option is ignored, if --n-mipmaps is set. --max-mm is a short cut.

--mipmap-size num
Define the minimal width and minimal height of a generated mipmap. Any value >0 is allowed. The default is 8. This option is ignored, if --n-mipmaps is set. --mm-size is a short cut.

--smart
This option is deprecated and ignored. Use option --fast-mipmaps instead.

--fast-mipmaps
If resizing an image, use the old fast resize algorithm instead of the new smart one.
The old algorithm is faster (factor 2-4) than the default algorithm, but creates more worst resized images. This is only relevant if creating a mipmap for images with odd width or odd height. --fast-mm is a short cut.
