I just bought a wii from an asian man, and it just so happened that it was a Japanese console. When I powered it on, I saw a channel on the menu that displayed Softchip: Wii, DVD-R. Asian Text also displayed. Can someone tell me what the channel does?

Its a channel (and a backup loader) that allows you to run game backups from DVD-R without a modchip or USB loader installed. It requires an old cIOS in slot 249 ( <= rev 14 ) and a compatible drive (most old drives work). I'm unsure of System Menu versions, but it may be that most 4.x won't work.
The backup discs would only spin with 3x instead of 6x typical for Wii games, so they might lag. But in the age of USB loaders you don't have to use DVDs for backups anymore (they're not supported by most drives after 2009).

Though my Wii has a USB loading channel anyways, I inserted my North American Wii games, loaded the SoftChip Channel, and I was able to play them. I was even allowed to save data. So it can operate as a Geco as well. Unfortunately, I'm unable to load my North American Gamecube games through the Disc Channel and the SoftChip channel, so I will have to get Geco anyways..right? And If I use the Ultimate Installer, will it show me the software thats compatible for my 4.1 Wii?
Thank you.
