A friend of mine gets kicked all the time automatically by wiimmfi, saying it's because of an unallowed proxy or VPN, but he doesn't have anything like that. What could it be?

Can you ask your friend what's running on port 500 of his host device?

His IP may be running IPsec services, which often use port 500 for the IKE protocol. He may be able to determine what's running on port 500 with nmap:
